The Well-Readheads Long Halftime Talk [The Best Books of 2012, So Far] LH: Here’s a bit of craziness: We are already halfway through 2012. Isn’t that insane?! It seems like I was just perusing The Millions’ preview of the most anticipated books of 2012. And blink! it’s practically July and I’ve read almost 100 books. But what a bunch of books! Today we’re going to focus on our favorites of 2012 so far. I’m sure some of my titles will overlap with yours, because we’ve recommended books to one another. Note: we’re only discussing books that are available now. We’ll cover the rest at the end of the year. How awesome is it that we have another six months to cram books into our brains? So exciting! RJS: ZOMG, I just need a minute to take in the fact that you’ve read 100 books already! That’s almost twice what I’ve read. Mama, you’re a machine! I’ve been mixing a lot of backlist into my reading this yearand it’s been a nice change from all frontlist, all the timebut it means I don’t quite have ten arm-flail-worthy new books to rave about. S’okay, though. I like you, so I’mma let you go first. LH: I’ll start with The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. This is a brilliant, creepy story idea, about what happens to the planet when the Earth’s rotation starts slowing down. I’m sure lots of hard science fiction books have covered this same idea, but this one is told through the eyes of an 11-year-old, which makes it sweet and less scientificky, more accessible to people who don’t like to read sci-fi. (Even if I can’t fathom such people existing.) RJS: On the subject of genre-y things that make genre more accessible, let’s take a minute for our boyfriend Nick Harkaway (I feel like we’ve earned the right to call him that, don’tcha think?) and the amazing Angelmaker. It has gangsters, a swashbuckling hero, mechanical bees that can end the world, a mix of noir and dieselpunk (whatever the hell that is, I just stole the term from a recent review), and is easily the most fun reading experience I’ve had this year. LH: Oh, hells yes, Nick Harkaway. I couldn’t count Angelmaker on this list, because I read it last year, but I never get tired of recommending him. I’ve also been telling everyone about Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt. It’s about a teenage girl whose uncle dies, and she discovers that he had a partner her parents never told her about. She starts meeting with him in secret, and learning more about her uncle and her family. On top of being a wildly impressive debut, this also has one of the best covers of the year. RJS: Arcadia by Lauren Groff also has a happy-making cover, and that’s just the beginning. Set on a commune in upstate New York, it follows one family through several decades of life, as they discover that the utopian society they wish for isn’t so simple to create. Groff’s writing is so gorgeous, and some of her sentences are so heartbreakingly perfect, that I took forever to finish the book, not wanting it to end. But when it does end? Amazing! Gutsy but restrained and so, so smart. LH: I loved Arcadia as well. And The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits also has an astounding cover, bright as hard candy. Julia is studying at a school for psychics when she comes under psychic attack by a jealous professor and has to leave the institute. She ends up in Europe, where she learns about her mother, who died when Julia was very young. This book is so strange and fantastic. RJS: Okay, now I wish I’d written “bright as hard candy” to describe Arcadia. Moving on! How about another from you? LH: From Two Dollar Radio, one of my favorite publishers: Radio Iris by Anne-Marie Kinney. Iris is an office worker leading a humdrum existence, until a new tenant moves in next door to her place of employment. She starts spying on him, transfixed by the strange sights and sounds that emanate from his office it’s the most interesting thing to happen to her in years. This novel pressed on my Calvino sweet spot. I love it. RJS: Contents May Have Shifted by Pam Houston hit my sweet spot so many times and in so many ways that I lost my head a little bit. The sentences! The globetrotting! The delightfully dizzying mix of memoir and short stories and long-form fiction! The painfully accurate insights about human nature! I swoon for her. (And I may have uttered the phrase, “Pam Houston is my weakness” on a podcast earlier this year. Embarrassing, but totally worth it.) LH: Then there’s Breasts by Florence WIlliams. Oh em gee I learned so much from this book! It is packed with information about the evolution and history and science side of breasts. Did you know that we carry chemicals in our bodies that we get from our parents and grandparents? True story! Our grandparents breathed DDT? Zip! We now have it in our systems, passed down just like the family nose and male pattern baldness. I couldn’t stop reading parts of this out loud to my friends. It’s fascinating. (And I first heard about it from you, muffinpants.) RJS: Breasts is so awesome. I never realized before that scientists don’t really know why humans have the kind of breasts we have or the great extent to which our environments impact breast health. Yes, I just re-read that sentence, and I know it makes this book sound like the driest, most science-y thing ever, but that’s the thingFloDub (that’s what I’ve decided to call her now) makes the educational stuff entertaining. Also: boobs! LH: Let’s hear it for the girls! And now for something completely different: Stay Awake by Dan Chaon. Why is there not an altar to Dan Chaon in Central Park?! Why has his face not been carved in the side of the mountain?! Dan Chaon is a fracking literary genius. He is such an amazing writer. Stay Awake is a collection of short stories and they’re wonderful, every last one. If this book isn’t at least nominated for a major literary award this year, I am going to get all howler monkey on someone. RJS: *scribbles Stay Awake onto summer reading list* Please don’t be mad that I haven’t read this yet! I did love Await Your Reply. LH: You wouldn’t like me when I’m monkey. Now here’s a great book for fans of Confederacy of Dunces: Handling Sin by Michael Malone. It involves wacky family dynamics and a crazy road trip to New Orleans. I had never heard of Handling Sin before and I’m so delighted it was introduced into my life. It’s one of the funniest books I’ve read. (It didn’t hurt that the man who recommended I read it is wildly attractive I’d have eaten the pages instead of reading them if he had suggested it.) RJS: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew by Shehan Karunatilaka is my sleeper hit of the year. I had never heard of it until our mutual friend and fellow Rioter Jenn started raving about it, and I was more than a little skeptical about a book about cricket and Sri Lankan politics. BUT it’s really about an alcoholic writer who is so obsessed with his work and his subjecta relatively unknown but amazing cricket playerthat he doesn’t quite see how it affects his family. There’s a bit of a whodunnit, a splash of gangster conspiracy theory, and a ton of really smart and infinitely quotable one-liners. Oh, and it’s funny. I loved this book with a thousand loves. LH: That does sound incredible! I have a copy somewhere in the book tower. I’ll have to dig it out. And speaking of books that people are raving about: Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. I first heard about this book on Twitter it seemed like I turned my computer on one day, and everyone was talking about it. And the hype is completely deserved it’s a stupendous, non-preachy, anti-war novel, about a troop of servicemen who are brought to a Dallas Cowboys game to be honored for their bravery in the Iraq War. I smell National Book Award. I know this one is going to make your list, too. RJS: Oh hell-to-the-yes. I don’t really know when I became a person who loves a good satirical war novel, but I’m glad it happened so I could fall for Billy Lynn. It’s no easy feat to criticize a warand actually, a whole culturewhile being funny and not so political that you become argumentative, and Ben Fountain pulls it off like it ain’t no thang. I want to jump this book’s bones. LH: Yes, agreed. I wouldn’t even make it buy me dinner first. So, Tin House has some great releases this year. One is Glaciers by Alexis M. Smith, a beautiful little novel about a young woman who works in a library, pines after a coworker, and shops in secondhand stores, all told in the span of a day. Glorious, glorious, glorious. Smith writes such crystalline sentences, you can see your reflection in them. RJS: If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you were trying to seduce me, writing phrases like “such crystalline sentences, you can see your reflection in them.” Tom Bissell has that skillthe crystalline sentences and the seductively good writingand it’s on full display in Magic Hours. I’m still working my way through this collection of essays about creativity, and it is making my brain tingle in really satisfying ways. Sure to be a favorite of 2012 and beyond. LH: Ahhhhh MUST. READ. This brings me to my last recommendation:  Afterlives of the Saints by Colin Dickey. 1. This is a book about saints. 2. It’s great. And now that we’ve gotten the important part out of the way, I want to tell you that Colin Dickey is so brilliant, it makes my eyes bleed. I try and imagine what the inside of his brain looks like, and all I can see is that scene in Bad Lieutenant when Harvey Keitel smokes crack and takes all his clothes off and cries. What I’m trying to say is Colin talks about things that never even register on most people’s radars. He speaks in a language only dogs can hear. And then translates it for the rest of us. Thomas Builds-the-Fire is a storyteller on a reservation who everyone ignores because they think he is crazy. Victor on the other hand is a guy who would not dare be seen talking to Thomas. Thomas knows that Victor is in need of help, but Victor will not admit it. I want to show how these two characters who are completely opposite of each other, come together during a time of need. It took Victor a trip to Phoenix to see that Thomas was there for a reason, to help him because they were cousins. When they returned back to the reservation, Victor knew that he still could not be seen talking to Thomas for fear of being ridiculed for talking to the crazy storyteller. â€Å"Victor knew that he couldn’t really be friends with Thomas, even after all that had happened. It was cruel but it was real.† (Alexie P. 518) Victor in a way was thankful for Thomas’ help but seemed too proud to admit it to Thomas. Victor knows that Thomas would remain th e crazy storyteller. In a way Victor felt ashamed of himself. Thomas on the other hand was ok with knowing Victor would not talk to him again after their trip to Phoenix. â€Å"I know you ain’t going to treat me any better than you did before. At trial, Sullivan argued that advertisements are not protected by the First Amendment and after a brief deliberation, the jury decided in favor of Sullivan awarding him damages of 500,000. [3] The award was upheld by the Alabama Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court of the United States reversed the decision of the lower courts. The Court declared that, although commercial advertisements may not be protected under the First Amendment, editorial advertisements were. Additionally, the Court ruled that the First and 14th Amendments require a public official suing for defamation to prove that the allegedly defamatory comments were made with â€Å"actual malice that is, with knowledge that if was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not. †[4] With these words the Court added a new criterion to test whether a criticism was punishable. Not only did the words have to be false and cause damage to the person’s reputation, they also had to be made with the knowledge that they were false. The Sullivan decision was hailed as a victory for a free press. Ralph A. Behrend and R. Allen Behrendt both worked at same hospital; LA Times charged Dr. Behrendt with the theft of narcotics and accused him of being an addict until his health had become destroyed. [5] When actually it was Dr. Behrend, a resident doctor who committed the crime. Dr. Behrendt sued and won because the publication involved an attempted reference to an individual so vague that it could refer to more than one person[6] In early 1975, Senator William Proxmire implemented what he called the Golden Fleece Award of the Month. The award was given out to governmental agencies which sponsored programs and research that Proxmire found to be a waste of tax dollars. One Golden Fleece went to federal agencies sponsoring the research of Ronald Hutchinson, a behavioral scientist. Proxmire detailed the nonsense of Hutchinsons research on the floor of the Senate, in conferences with his staff, and in a newsletter sent to over 100,000 of his constituents. Hutchinson sued for libel, arguing that Proxmires statements defamed his character and caused him to endure financial loss and emotional anguish. This case explored the scope of protection afforded members of Congress by the Constitutions Speech and Debate Clause of the Constitution. The Court upheld the decision of the lower courts and held that Proxmires statements in his newsletters and press releases were not protected by the Speech and Debate Clause. However, in upholding this ruling, the Court also found that Proxmires statements were not made with actual malice and thus, were not libelous. Why You Should Avoid Racist Halloween Costumes Once upon a time, Halloween costumes were simple. Witches, princesses, and ghosts surfaced as the most popular get-ups. Not so anymore. In recent decades, the public has taken a fancy to costumes that make a statement. Unfortunately, these costumes sometimes make statements viewed as racist or anti-Semitic, such as when Englands Prince Harry donned a Nazi outfit to a party. Want to make a splash with your Halloween costume but not one that’s racially offensive? Then avoid the following get-ups. Ghetto Person/Black Person Rappers introduced the term â€Å"ghetto fabulous† into the American lexicon in the 1990s. The term refers to the flamboyant fashions that arise from the streets of inner cities. Who knew in the ’90s that college kids nationwide would throw parties in the new millennium with â€Å"ghetto fab† themes? Guests at such parties sport lots of â€Å"bling,† or ostentatious jewelry. Some might cover their teeth with fake gold or platinum caps and their heads with do-rags. Women might wear huge hoop earrings, fake fingernails and the scanty clothing that rap video vixens wear. Men might style their hair in cornrows or don Afro wigs. The problem with these ghetto fab costumes is that they invoke stereotypical images of African Americans as low-class, gauche, thuggish and sexually provocative, among others. These costumes tend to be classist and racist, impelling black college students who become aware of â€Å"ghetto fab† parties to have disciplinary action taken against party organizers for creating a racially hostile environment on campus. Redneck The flipside of the ghetto fab costume is the redneck or hillbilly Halloween costume, which is also both racist and classist. Those opting for such a costume might wear a mullet wig, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat, along with jeans and a plaid shirt. Such costumes promote the stereotype that poor whites are ignorant and worthy of ridicule. They suggest that poor and working-class whites are inherently inferior to their more affluent counterparts. Geisha Girl Oddly enough, the geisha girl costume is popular among girls and women, alike. Considering that geishas are perceived to be high-end prostitutes in many circles, that’s cause for concern. Also troubling is that, along with the dragon lady, china doll, and lotus blossom, geisha girl is a racial and sexual stereotype thrust upon Asian women. The geisha stereotype is one that paints Asian women as submissive, doll-like and existing only to sexually gratify others. A contributor to Racialicous.com who goes by the name Atlasien poignantly spelled out why she objects to the appropriation of the geisha image. â€Å"Geisha are not very relevant in modern-day Japan. They’re a fossilized archetype, almost like a ninja,† she remarked. â€Å"But a lot of people, especially white people, are invested in defending geisha, in putting them on a pedestal. And when they do that, it does harm to Japanese-American women and to all Asian-American women.† Muslim The 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon not only put Arab and Muslim Americans under additional scrutiny in the U.S., but they also resulted in a rise in costumes related to Islamic fundamentalism. Want to wear a burqa for Halloween? There’s a costume for it. How about a Muslim suicide bomber? That costume’s available as well. The question is why would you want to wear one of these costumes? They’re far more likely to offend people you encounter than to make them laugh. To boot, they raise the worst stereotypes about Muslim Americans, the overwhelming majority of whom are peaceful and law-abiding citizens. American Indians (With or Without Cowboys) Considering the backlash against Native American mascots in sports, it should be no surprise that donning an American Indian costume is likely to rub some the wrong way. Whether you’re a kid dressing up as an Indian during a Thanksgiving play or an adult rooting for your favorite sports team while wearing faux war paint and a headdress, you’re likely to get a reaction because these costumes typically paint Native Americans as cartoonish and savage. Throwing cowboys into the mix only adds insult to injury. When European â€Å"cowboys† settled the Americas, they not only set out to appropriate Native lands but to decimate or neutralize the indigenous population. â€Å"Cowboys and Indians† parties make light of the atrocities committed in the name of manifest destiny. A January 2009 editorial written by college student Tefari Abel Casas Fuchs reveals how emotionally damaging â€Å"Cowboys and Indians† parties can be to Native American students. In addition to these issues, the sexy Pocahontas costumes on the market for women are racially offensive as well. Not only do they sexualize Pocahontas, a young adolescent girl, but Native American women generally. All too often, the sexual relationships Native American women had with European settlers were exploitative or abusive, with Native women regarded as the derogatory term â€Å"squaw.† Gypsy Gypsy getups frequently make the rounds at Halloween functions. Like Native American costumes, however, these costumes typically paint Gypsies, more appropriately called Roma, in cartoonish terms. â€Å"The romanticized image of the ‘Gypsy’ is alive and well in song lyrics, novels, costume parties, musical groups, and other forms of cultural imagery: ‘They are exotic women in colorful skirts, dancing in sensual swirls....’ They dance by campfires, travel in caravans, tell fortunes with crystal balls or Tarot cards,† notes advocacy group Voice of Roma. In addition to this, the Roma are stereotyped as being beggars, pickpockets, and con-artists. A case in point is that one can use the expressions â€Å"I got conned† and â€Å"I got gypped† interchangeably. Rather than counteract such stereotypes, Gypsy costumes promote them, ignoring the fact that the Roma have long been persecuted and continue to face virulent discrimination throughout Europe. During the Holocaust, approximately 1.5 million Roma were exterminated. In the present, Roma are denied their rights to housing, employment, healthcare, and education, according to Amnesty International. The agency also reports that Roma are often victims of forced evictions, racist attacks, and police brutality. How stiff is bias against the Roma? When Madonna asked for Roma discrimination to stop during a concert in Bucharest in August 2009, the crowd reportedly jeered. Wrapping Up When choosing Halloween costumes with a racial bent, err on the side of caution. You’ll be less likely to offend if you dress up as a specific person rather than an anonymous member of a racial group. In other words, consider going as Barack Obama for Halloween rather than a black guy, any black guy. And be sure to avoid changing your features in a way that’s offensive. This means not wearing blackface to be President Obama or taping your eyes so that they slant if you’re dressing up as Bruce Lee. Plenty of Obama masks are available in Halloween stores, and a black wig, fake scratches on the face and a martial arts outfit might be all you need to be Bruce Lee.

How to Write a Career-Winning or Award-Winning Executive Resume As the owner of an executive resume writing company, I am extremely proud to have four writers on my team, including myself, who have won coveted TORI (Toast of the Resume Industry) awards for their Executive Resume, Finance Resume, International Resume, Sales Resume, and New Graduate Resume entries. On February 9th, Laura DeCarlo, President of Career Directors International, author of Resumes for Dummies, and my personal resume writing and business mentor, presented a teleseminar on how to win these competitive awards. While her presentation was targeted toward resume writers and executive resume writers who wish to compete for TORI awards, some of the points she raised apply to any executive or job seeker creating a career-winning resume. Here are some of the points to keep in mind if you want to write a resume or executive resume that rivals the TORI winners from this past year: 1. Create a compelling format. First of all, know your industry and adjust accordingly. For instance, you can take more creative license as a marketing or sales executive than you can as an insurance or finance executive. Once you determine your industry’s comfort level with design, as well as your own, create something that â€Å"pops† while not going overboard. You don’t need fancy graphics programs to design a great looking resume. You might be surprised by how much you can do with Word! For instance, use edge-to-edge design, different backgrounds (with discretion), color saturation variations, etc. Include a little smart art if appropriate – it’s all in Word – or create a chart in Excel and paste that into your resume. Include plenty of white space, as text-dense resumes are not well-received. Print it out before sending – and run it by some colleagues in your industry for their opinion. 2. Watch your language! Use smart word choices, dynamic and varied verbs, and good sentence structure. No misspellings or run-on sentences please! Many hiring managers will dismiss a resume out of hand for a single grammatical error. And if they start getting bored because you started every bullet with the verb â€Å"led† or â€Å"managed,† you could lose them fast. 3. Deliver â€Å"power and punch.† Keep the reader engaged. Pack your executive resume with measurable achievements – metrics and concrete/tangible results. Also, deliver a clear description of the scope of your responsibilities. Share your CAR (Challenge/Action/Result), PAR (Problem/Action/Result) or STAR (Situation/Task/Action/Result) stories that show how you have tackle challenges and what results you have created. These accomplishments will demonstrate what you’re capable of creating for your next company. 4. Convey your Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Tell us what makes you stand out as opposed to anyone else applying for this position. Do this in the first few lines of your resume! Don’t be scared of selling yourself by dropping names and numbers directly into your resume summary. Make yourself shine! 5. Put yourself in the employee’s shoes. Imagine yourself reading your resume as your future employer. What would you be looking for? Would you hire you? As someone reading a resume, you would of course want to see some of the keywords that are essential to the position. That’s just the basics. Once that threshold is past, is this resume enjoyable to read? Do you have to squint to read it? Are you bored? Do you really get who this person is and the difference they could make for your company? Be rigorous in asking – and answering –   these questions. 6. Do your homework. As the time to write your new resume approaches, start looking for formats and content that you like. When you come across something that impresses you, put it in a file on your computer. On the whole, an increase in vegetable, fruit, and healthy grain intake has been suggested along with the reduction or complete avoidance of fatty foods, dairy products, high levels of sugar intake, and har mful beverages (Chan, Ghan, and Giovannucci 2005). Aside from dietary changes, certain medications are also provided to prostate cancer patients to alleviate the intestinal irritation symptoms attributed to radiation treatment, including loose bowel movements, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. An enzyme in the body that is significantly affected by radiation therapy is lactose, which assists the body in digesting milk and other dairy products (Agarwal et al. 2008). Doctors or registered dietitians tend to recommend a diet that is low in lactose intake after the patient has undergone radiation treatment as it makes lactose difficult to be digested for a period of time. Inspector Goole enters the Birling household (and in my opinion acting as Priestley's alter-ego), causing unrest amongst some of them and no affect on others. The mood changes from a happy, celebratory atmosphere to a tense and mysterious one. Maybe this could be shown in a change of lighting, being more intense as apposed to before when the family were rejoicing the fact of their daughter's engagement. When the inspector begins to interrogate Mr Birling he refuses to accept any responsibility for Eva Smith's death, he gives no thought to his actions and this is obvious as he shows relatively little remorse or guilt. However, Mr Birling has an honest approach to life, not ashamed by his refusal to give Eva Smith a raise 'I refused of course,' and seems surprised why anyone would query his actions. Alternatively, rap’s main focus is free styling and looping words to create a â€Å"story† in a flowing rhyme, keeping it in sync with the beat. In most cases, like the rapper Machine Gun Kelly, the artist preforms by themselves with the assistance with a DJ or MC to play the musical tracks for the songs. Rap displays a larger emphasis on lyrics, while ro ck likes to have a variety of sounds. In the rock genre, it’s all about expression. Rock music can speak about all kinds of topics, from love to some not so pleasant. Many rock musicians sing about real issues that teens are going through, which helps teens find motivation. Adolescents sometimes find it difficult to communicate with older people, most of the time because of ideological differences. This often makes teens with problems shy away from seeking help and guidance. Teens find hope and encouragement when they listen to music that talks about problems they are going through. The identification they are experiencing with the rock song  lyrics can also help teens to become more tolerant and open-minded. A study published for the 9th International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition reported that mood regulation is one of the most important reasons why people listen to their favorite music (McCammon). Rock music can help mood regulation in teenagers, especially females who are prone to mood swings and depression. For example, the song Eye of the Tige r by Survivor can cause teens to associate with the underdog. The song provides a positive message, while keeping an uplifting tone throughout the whole song. The music provides depressed teens with a mode to forget their problems and participate in healthy activities, such as dancing. While rock has been given a positive reputation for allowing teenagers to express themselves, some have given it a poor reputation because it can intensify emotions. While those people who are naturally happy and cheerful are less likely to have effects from the negative lyrics, other, less fortunate teens might not be the same. Adolescents who are susceptible to negative, violent, or depressive thoughts are more likely to have those feelings, and act on them, after listening to rock music. At the same time, if a person is not experiencing those negative thoughts, the music can act as a catalyst, causing the teen to have these thoughts and urges. The rap genre is often given a negative reputation for the way it effects teenagers. Critics of the genre say that the music objectifies women and promotes drug use. For example, the song 9 Problems by Jay-Z, repeat edly refers to a woman as a â€Å"bitch.† This song allowed women to be categorized under the vulgar name â€Å"bitch†, because of the high reception the song received in the media (The Portrayal of Women Within Popular Music). A recent study by WebMD reports that teenagers who listen to rap music are more likely to have babies and engage in risky sexual behavior (Kirchheimer). Apparently, this behavior is because the lyrics in many rap songs promote the idea of women as nothing more than sexual objects. Correspondingly, it was shown that youth who listened to rap songs were more likely to get involved with drugs. This is because in some songs, the artists refer to drugs that the person has not heard of, which sparks their curiosity to learn and most likely try the new drugs. The rap genre can also give teenagers a false sense of belonging. When they hear about, or see in the videos, expensive possessions, they feel that if they spend their money to buy that stuff, they can be just like the  people in the videos. The media then uses this to their advantage to market products to the younger, naà ¯ve generations. Even though rap is seen as a vulgar music genre by a large population, it can be positive for teenagers. It makes a person feel good about who they are because even if they may not live a good life, they can relate to the lyrics in a particular song. This is different than the false sense of belonging because instead of the individual trying to fit in, they are finding the place where they fit in, while not changing themselves. Rap lyrics also help youth feel free and powerful. They are free to express what they want to express. Listeners of the music have even gone to the extent of calling the rap genre â€Å"a religion for troubled youth† because it provides them with an outlet to express themselves and something to believe in. It is evident that rock and rap are very different genres that expose different messages to teenagers. But, no matter the genre of music, studies have shown that the use of music videos show an increased open-mindedness to deviant behavior among teenagers. The music videos reinforce what is being heard in the lyrics with the use of visuals. They usually exhibit sexual innuendo, acts of aggression, and gender stereotypes. Research has shown that, after watching videos, men said it was necessary to pursue the women to an inappropriate extent, while women thought it was annoying and/or disturbing. Men scored higher in relations to attitudes for sexual overtones, while women scored higher on the acceptance of interpersonal violence. The results of the study also showed that women who were often subjected to violent music videos were more accepting of violence. Also, men had a greater acceptance of sexual stereotyping and rape myths after watching the videos (The Effects of Violent Music Content On Teens). Over time, people have stereotyped genres of music. Sometimes the music is seen as positive and uplifting. But other times it is seen as negative and downgrading. In the end, the way that music effects teenagers all depends on how the tee n acts and interprets the music. Depending on their emotional and mental status, they can have different reactions to the music than someone who has different feelings than them.
